Candy factory day out
Because it was Chinese New Year, because we have children and because we were visiting family in Tainan we went along to the Candy Factory/YoYo TV/New Year exhibition in Tainan county.
Because it was Chinese New Year, so did a lot of other families. In fact, it seemed like all the families in Taiwan were there!
Other than the smothering crowds, the day out was a wonderful people watching event. The weather was quite cool over the Chinese new year. This allowed everyone to put on all their new clothes and dress their kids to the nines. And whole families were out. It is great to watch three generations enjoying a day out together.
Yoyo TV is the Taiwan cable TV kids channel. It contains lots of local content as well as a pile of international programs. One of the more popular at the moment is Sponge Bob Square Pants. It also runs Thomas the Tank engine. Rev W. V. Awdry would be thrilled to see that Taiwanese kids have taken up his creation as enthusiastically as any.
There was plenty of food including these small whole roasted birds. (Not chickens)
And it was a photo taking day. It is true that the advent of digital cameras has resulted in 10 times more photos in people’s collections. It also means that an events such as these there is a pretty high camera to people ratio. And everyone loves photos of the family.
These battery powered bikes with off centre front wheels were popular. Located just in front of the mens!
It is now possible to get really good fresh coffee everywhere. Many years ago that was nigh on impossible. Thank goodness for the coffee stand!
If you click on any picture you should see a slide show of all the pictures in full resolution.

Nice collection of photos of your day out. Did anyone O.D. on candy? Any free candy worth eating? And what were those statues by the portapots? One looks like Chen Shui-bien. Made out of chocolate?

Joel,
The venue was an old sugar cane yard and the exhibitions were in old sugar store houses. The statue does look a bit like Chen Shui-bien. You know Tainan is a deep green DPP strong-hold. I guess they are unlikely to make a statue of a sugar cane vendor look like Ma Ying-jeou.

Hey, I was wondering where the candy factory was. I live in Tainan but haven’t been there or heard of it before. Please do tell!

It was at Jaili about 20km north of Tainan on highway 19.
It was the candy festival held in the old Jaili sugar refinery yard. The yard has been converted to a large festival ground.
Here is a Google Map of the location.
